The Quinta is at the edge of the beautiful Arrabida National Park which stretches all the way to the coastline and beautiful beaches.  The Park was established to protect the beautiful landscape and rich variety of wildlife, including eagles, wildcats and badgers.

Apart from Lisbon, 40km away, Azeitão, Setubal, Palmela and Sesimbra are easily reached, making the self-catering villa an ideal base for unforgettable daily excursions.

    Azeitao Palace Folly

Azeitão, 2km from the villa, is a lovely village chosen by the nobility to build their Palaces and Quintas, due to its beauty, climate and abundant fishing and game. Some of these can still be visited today together with the various vineyards.

Sesimbra,a short drive away, is a quaint fishing town, famous for its castle, beach and beautiful sea front. Palmela has a towering very well preserved castle. Setubal has excellent fish restaurants by the sea front and a ferry to the nearby resort of Troia. Boat trips are organized to watch the dolphins living in the Sado estuary.

18th Century manor house built in the Romantic style, refurbished in 1994, and set in 14 hectares of gardens and meadows.  Vestiges of a mediaeval monastery, formal walks, a section of the aqueduct bringing water from the mountains to Setubal, and the stone channels irrigating the meadows and orchards fed by the well, now in ruins where a donkey turned the machinery which drew the water from below.

The property is divided into two houses which are accessed from either side of  the grand entrance hall, with its imposing staircase, working fireplace and 18th Century tiles (azulejos) dominated by the figure of a nobleman.  There is ample seating, antique furniture and paintings.

Beaches

10km away is one of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal, ‘Portinho de Arrabida’. A sheltered cove of white sand and with pine trees as a backdrop, its quiet crystal clear waters are perfect for swimming and children, and are popular with divers for their colourful underwater life. Other sandy coves lie at the foot of the limestone cliffs. Praia da Figuerinha offers sport fishing, windsurfing, and sailing and has vast sand banks at low tide.

Nautical sports

For diving, the local beach has of the most interesting diving in Portugal with its grottos and abundant marine life. Sailing, windsurfing, canoeing and rowing can all be practiced in the safe bay. Golf.

Gastronomy and wine tasting

The region of Azeitão is famed for its gastronomy, and even the local supermarket has a mix of gourmet and standard products. The local gastronomic festival is held from June to September. Fresh grilled fish is an inexpensive delight. Five formal wine routes have been devised in the Setubal peninsula by the ‘Rota de Vinhos’ association, combining wine tasting with sightseeing, arts and nature.

Quinta da Bella Vista - Setubal  - Surface area : 550 m2

Magnificent 18th Century manor house, set in 14 hectares of gardens, orchards and meadows, with vestiges of a mediaeval monastery, formal walks, a section of the aqueduct which supplied Setubal, and a ruined well where a donkey once turned the wheel which drew the water to irrigate the estate.  There are far reaching views from the main terrace of the tranquil valley the house shares with similar properties, from where a monumental staircase leads down to the pool and tennis court.

Grand entrance hall with imposing staircase, working fireplace and 18th Century azulejos (tiles), with ample seating, antiques and paintings.  The glory of the house is the formal dining and sitting rooms.  The dining room faces south over the terrace with a large window and French door.  It is entirely painted in frescoes by a well-known decorative artist fifty years ago, depicting local scenes: Palmela mountain and castle; the cliffs and beach at Albacol; the salt being harvested in the salinas (salt marshes);  and the donkey drawing water from the well in the grounds.  The mantlepiece of  the working fire is made from local stone and, with the faceted, painted wood ceiling, the antique furniture and carpets, the whole affect is of a grandeur and elegance in keeping with the house.

There is ample storage space and safe parking.

Cleaning twice a week is included in the price
