The Moors' Castle Walls | Location
Sintra is unique and deserves its status as a world heritage site. First the Moors, then the Portuguese kings who expelled them, built their castles and palaces there. In later ages, Sintra attracted rich foreigners who created villas and stately homes with lush gardens and romantic architecture - outdone by King Don Fernando, whose bizarre palace anticipated mad King Ludwig's Rhine castle by several years.
The location is ideal for exploring not just Sintra but central Portugal, given the easy access to the motorway system. Lisbon is only half an hour by train or car, and Cascais and Estoril 20 minutes away. Further afield - in easy day trips from Sintra - you can visit the walled city of Obidos, the Knights Templar castle of Tomar and Batalha Abbey, the monastery palace of Mafra, the seaside towns of Sesimbra and Ericeira, Palmela castle and Arrabida national park. The house stands in an area of Sintra designated as historical heritage, where no new construction is allowed. |
Lovingly restored over the years to the highest standards by its interior designer owners, the group of 4 houses known as Casas Amarelas stands in its own gardens above the street in the Sao Pedro area of historic Sintra. Newly furnished with a mix of rustic and modern pieces, all the houses are now ready to welcome guests. Casas Amarelas has become an example of how to restore period buildings in Sintra, a marriage of comfort and tradition.
