| Location
Large Comporta holiday villa Close to Alcácer do Sal, 80km South East of Lisbon, which boasts a castle recently restored from Moorish ruins on a promontory dominating the peaceful valley of the River Sado. In Roman times the small town was an important centre for harvesting salt and exporting it by sea. The town quay is the old harbor. There is a record of a fort existing as early as the 6th century BC. The area is also well known for its vast variety of birds and its many stork nests. Alcacer has the distinction of being the largest Freguesia (Parish) in terms of area in Iberia.
We also recommend that you visit the Rice Museum at Comporta and the villages of Torrão and Montemor o Novo, as well as the range of archeological sites in the area, some as old as the Iron Age.
South of Alcacer are the important towns of Évora and Sines. Évora is a university town with many interesting buildings and archeological sites. Sines is an important oil terminal as well as being a charming town with a picturesque harbor and stunning beaches to its south (Porto Covo for example). Also to the south is Santiago do Cacém, a pre-historical town full of character- do not miss a visit to the roman ruins of Santa Catarina. To the north is Setubal, known for its delicious fresh fish and unspoilt coast and the large nature reserve of the Setubal bay itself, which can be crossed by car ferry from Troia into the centre of the town. And of course Lisbon is an easy day trip, reached in an hour on the motorway. |
Protected 1000 hectare estate The villa is set in Herdade do Montalvo, a picturesque private estate located in a conservation area; Herdade do Montalvo is a private condominium set up to receive international guests. Spanning 1000 hectares, it borders the river Sado estuary for 600 metres. The estate has extensive cycle paths and is fantastic walking territory. For nature lovers, there are observation posts from which to watch the wild birds and animals which inhabit the estate. | Location map | Beaches Comporta beach, 15 minutes by car, is situated within the wonderful Sado Estuary Nature Reserve and the extensive wide beaches of Brejos, Galé or Carvalhal are also a short drive away. The region preserves astonishing natural beauty, where pine trees give through sand dunes to the refreshing ocean. The expansive sand dunes and beaches provide ideal conditions for surfing and kite surfing alike. Comporta beach is the longest sandy beach in the whole of Europe and is deservedly famous. Parking facilities are good, and never too crowded. The beaches offer good facilities and the next almost deserted beach is never far away. Water sports Sailing, windsurfing, canoeing and rowing are all available in the safe bay of the Sado estuary, with surfing and kite surfing at Comporta beach. Reservoir There is a large reservoir in the estate, where you can swim, sail and canoe or engage in other non-motorized water sports. Tennis Tennis courts inside the condominium can be used by guests (small fee applies).
Golf
9/18 hole golf courses at Troia /Herdade da Comporta and Montado, close to Setubal, are just a short drive away.
Gastronomy and wine tasting The region is famed for its gastronomy, with its fresh grilled fish being an inexpensive delight. Five formal wine routes have been devised in the Setubal peninsula by the ‘Rota de Vinhos’ association, combining wine tasting with sightseeing, arts and nature.

Villa Moinho - Herdade de Montalvo - Surface area : 350 m2
Very large self catering holiday villa located in the Natural Reserve of the river Sado in Herdade do Montalvo, a private condominium spread over 1,000 hectares. This beautiful estate has extensive cycle paths and walks, and borders the Sado river for 600 metres. There is a small supermarket and the condominium has excellent security. On the ground floor of of Villa Moinho there is a huge living area with two large sofas and seating for 12, and a dining area which can seat 18 comfortably; a cozy fireplace takes the chill off colder winter days. The main modern kitchen is spacious and well equipped, and has a separate breakfast area. The living room opens via the terrace to the pool and garden. The terrace has outdoor furniture and is a lovely location for outdoor meals. A double bedroom with its en-suite shower room is also situated on the ground floor. The twin bedroom is up a small flight of stairs and close to a large bathroom. The master bedroom, with its large double bed, has an en-suite bathroom with bath, sink, bidet and lavatory. Also on this floor is the second smaller kitchen which has a hob, sink and fridge freezer. This kitchen is linked to the second living/dining area which has a TV and, as well as a dining table for 4; one of the double bedrooms links directly to this area which is practically self-contained. The garden floor has two large bedrooms; one bedroom has 3 bunk beds acomodating 6 people in total; the other bedroom has 2 bunk beds and two single beds, also accommodating 6 people in total. Another shower room services these bedrooms. These bedrooms are loved by children and adolescents, as much noise can be made without disturbing the upstairs quarters. The garden can also be accessed from this level. The loft is a lovely open space providing a third spacious living room. There are two sofa beds for larger groups. Past the terrace of Villa Moinho, the large 10m*5m swimming pool is located. Sun loungers are provided. The lawn has been replanted and is currently growing, the garden is being landscaped.

Getting there and around
2 hours flight from most European cities and 7 hours from New York, the villa is reached by car from Lisbon airport in 1 hour. Faro airport is 2 hours away. A car is recommended to enjoy the many delights of the area fully. There is a small supermarket on the estate. |
